Shelby, a former insurance investigator,
lived a happy life; he was completely in love with his wife and he was
good at his job. All of that changed one night when intruders broke in,
raped and murdered Shelbyрs wife, and gave Shelby massive brain
damage that took away his ability to form new memories. Shelby now wanders
around trying to find the man who killed his wife and destroyed his life.
Shelby is organized в as he tells everyone he meets, every time he
meets them в he has a system. He takes Polaroid pictures of
important things in his life, like his car, his home, and people that he
meets. But the really important information is tattooed on his body. For
this film to work, you have to care about Shelby. Guy Pierce does a
remarkable job of making you sympathize with a character who is constantly
being reborn and never really knows who he is. Shelby is completely
obsessed в his only purpose in life is to find the man who destroyed
his happiness. Pierceрs Shelby is an intensely intelligent man who
fights with all his might to achieve his goal. When asked why he is so
obsessed with a retribution he wonрt even remember, he explains that
his wifeрs death is still avenged even if he canрt remember
it. сThe world doesnрt go away when you close your eyes,т
he reasons. The Matrix alumni Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano fill out
the cast as mysterious characters who are either helping Shelby or using
him. Both actors hide their intentions beautifully in the opening scenes,
leaving the audience just as confused as Shelby as to what they really
want.
