Carrie-Anne Moss, who co-starred in The Matrix and stars in the upcoming
Suspect Zero, began her career as a model. She liked it, she says.
"It was very hard, really hard on your soul, because it was so
superficial and all about your exterior," adds Moss.
"And when I came here to become an actress, I made my living for a
little while doing little bits of modelling and then I really realised I had
to stop because I think, in order to be a good actor, you can't be
self-conscious.
"You can't care about how you look. You just can't. It was so
important to me that I didn't have that any more, so I quit modelling, even
though that was really what was giving me the opportunity to act.
"But I knew that I had to break that kind of thing that you have to
have in order to be a model ... and then I was rudely awakened when I realised
that acting was pretty much the same.
"When an acting teacher told me that I needed to lose weight, I just
about fell off my chair, and never studied with him again.
"But then I found out that it was actually kind of true, that in order
to work in this business, you have to really take care of your looks and
stuff. But I can't be obsessed with it. I just can't be. I would rather not do
it."
